BOC Eyes Rapid Hydrogen Adoption over Next Decade

BOC, one of the UK’s largest hydrogen suppliers, has called for greater industry-wide collaboration to ensure the UK is at the forefront of hydrogen adoption over the next decade.

Advancements made over the next ten years will likely prove critical in the deployment of hydrogen to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors, including transport and industrial applications. The UK government’s Ten Point Plan made hydrogen a pillar, but now it’s time to accelerate that growth. BOC will be attending Foresight Hydrogen to help shape debate at a critical juncture in the rollout of hydrogen at scale in the UK.

Hydrogen is a crucial part of our energy future, and its use in mobility offers the best means to decarbonise larger vehicles such as HGVs, buses and trains. BOC delivered one of Europe’s largest hydrogen refuelling stations in Kittybrewster, Aberdeen, working alongside Aberdeen City Council to develop a state-of-the-art refuelling station capable of supplying the city’s entire fleet of 15 hydrogen buses.

Ahead of his attendance at Foresight Hydrogen Live, BOC’s Hydrogen Business Development Manager, Scott Chudleigh, said: “We see Kittybrewster as just the beginning and at BOC we’re excited by the opportunities and challenges ahead in deploying hydrogen refuelling infrastructure at scale. This is a key moment to lay the groundwork for the development of hydrogen infrastructure for HGV’s, which in turn can act as an accelerator for broader hydrogen adoption in transport.”

Drawing on the expertise at both BOC and parent company, Linde, we’re working on some of the most exciting projects in Europe utilising hydrogen to decarbonise transport. Worldwide, the Linde Group has already built more than 200 hydrogen refuelling stations for buses, HGVS, service vehicles and cars. The company recently announced a partnership with the Port of Hamburg to deliver refuelling infrastructure to meet the needs of both port logistics and HGV’s.

BOC is also the hydrogen supplier for multiple government funded fuel switching demonstrations, playing a key role in the development of alternative fuels that can help decarbonise heavy industry. Alongside hydrogen, BOC are pioneering the use of oxygen in key industry trials. BOC’s UK Applications Sales Manager for Decarbonisation and Hydrogen, Wayne Bridger, will be speaking at Hydrogen Foresight to address the changes industry can make now to ensure a fast and efficient transition.

Ahead of the event, Wayne Bridger said: “It’s critical that industry invests now in knowledge and infrastructure to decarbonise practices. Waiting for a silver bullet solution will only add to longer term costs, and there are steps that can be taken now to open the pathway to decarbonisation.”
